Mary Beth Bennett

I am a member of the Dell Challenge team, specializing in student recruitment and volunteer management. I have visited many campuses and organizations over the past six months, always spreading the word about social innovation and the Challenge. I've met tons of amazing people, working on important and inspirational projects. I'm hoping that all of them will participate in our competition and community!

Before joining the Dell Challenge team, I was a Master's student at UT Austin, studying Nonprofit Communications. I interned at several local nonprofits and got to practice my copywriting and branding skills. If you're ever looking for opinions on logos, headlines, or other branding queries, I'd love the chance to help out!

In high school and during my undergraduate degree at Southern Methodist University, I was a classical Mezzo soloist. I still love music and classical singing, although I don't get as many opportunities to sing these days! One interesting thing about me is that I have two first names: Mary and Beth. This confuses some people who are not familiar with the Southern US tradition of a double first name. In an attempt to make things easy on people, I often request to be called MB, a nickname my grandfather gave me as a girl. I love to cook and bake and I'm passionate about delicious, healthy food. I have experience working in nice restaurants, so I've gotten spoiled over the years! I also enjoy spending time with my family and watching great films (checked out from the library).

I'm thrilled to be a part of the DellChallenge.org community and I look forward to discovering our students' great ideas in DSIC 2012!

INSPIRATIONS

My car has room for five people. I usually transport only myself. This is wasteful. I support investments in public transportation infrastructure, like light rail and high-speed rail. More environmentally friendly, safer, and less stressful on the whole. After all, the road is a dangerous place.
This is a video from one of our 2011 Finalists. I am inspired by the mission of this project because women's health and well-being is a cause that is particularly close to my heart. I wish Sanitation Solutions the best of luck in 2012!
Too many American children are battling unnecessary chronic diseases. This article describes some of New York City's efforts to decrease the obesity rate among schoolchildren. Over the past five years, obesity rates have fallen by 5.5%! Could mean they're doing something right...
