Improve the quality of air. Prevent allergies. Increase labor productivity. Bring luck.
Mankind is increasingly leaving nature behind, migrating to concrete jungles where green space is at a premium. Yet urban dwellers will always long for a connection to the earth: we build parks, protect nature reserves, and grow gardens. We’ve become adept at shaping nature to fit our multiple spaces and lifestyles. WallTop Forest is a collaboration between architects, designers, technologists and environmental leaders who are building new ways of interacting with nature. Our 21st century sculptural terrariums combine modular architecture, basic laws of physics, embedded technologies, and mobile computing to construct a “WallTop Forest” where the aesthetic meets the pragmatic.

WallTop Forest

WallTop Forest is the fully automatic plants caring system that is installed on your wall (or on your table) to bring new ways of interacting with nature. It is an easy-to-use electronic smarttray that grows plants without watering and fertilizing. You don’t have to have any knowledge about gardening, instead everything will be taken care by the smart technology. WallTop Forest measures all the necessary parameters and doses an exact amount of water, fertilizer, air and light, according to the plant’s needs. You can also track your plants’ health and control watering and fertilizing system through your smartphone app.

Nowaday, the fast and modern life makes our green space disappear or narrow down. The demand of growing plants at home or office is very high but we have limited time and we do not have enough land for planting. Urban house cannot have green space like rural house.

A space with a lot of trees, flowers and fresh fruit also means that space has good feng shui, because it proves positive air, brings prosperity and happiness. WallTop Forest is the suitable solution for all living spaces, especially useful for busy city people.
Some researches also showed that the role of trees on people’s life:
- Improving the quality of air
- Preventing allergies
- Increasing labor productivity
- Bringing luck
- Providing friendly feeling, harmony with nature without losing the modern look of the city space.

Plants are the best. They’re pretty, they clean the air, they’re good listeners, and they don’t eat your furniture. On the downside, they need regular care, and they’re lousy communicators. We have created a system to make your relationship with them easier. Our system, called WallTop Forest, proposes to house your greenery in elegant structures that wrap them in a field of sensors to help you monitor their health.

Each frame is made with cedar wood and copper piping, with digital sensors and integrated lighting controlled by smartphone app. The plants live in an artful structure that’s nearly self-sustaining. After all, plants improve our quality of life and nurture us on an everyday basis; we think it’s only fair to nurture them in return. Units can operate as independent terrariums, or with extensive modular components to create a diverse ecosystem – your own personal park. Just think of WallTop Forest  as bionic plant furnishings for the information age that are equally at home in galleries, public spaces, cultural institutions, or apartments.

We are creating a large-scale interactive art installation, a "WallTop Forest" where plants populate stackable structures inside your home/office. In our installation we envision a dense, lush skyline, where water flows from one terrarium to another. Visitors to the space enter an immersive environment. Sounds of plants echo in their ears. Vibrant rays of light articulate every nuance of beauty that the eye can see. We're creating a space where a community who loves architecture, technology and plants can meet. Our mission is to integrate these disciplines into a new paradigm that changes the way we live and interact with nature. We believe that interacting with plants will improve our lives.

It started from a simple idea: Can we water our plants remotely with our iPhones while traveling or off site?. We had been desperately yearning for greenery, but worried that our busy travel schedule would doom our houseplants’ survival. “We live in a ‘there’s an app for that’ age, so we wanted to explore how we can use technology to improve our relationship with plants.

We see these designs as a potential ‘Internet of plants’ where global communities share and are connected by a network of plant cities. We are like aliens in our own home: we evolved from the earth like any other organism but we are intent in controlling it.

We love this project because it’s an example of really elegant mass customization; it marries the physical, digital, and natural worlds, making it feel like you could have the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in your living room. We’ll sign up for that!
