Universal Braille Writer is an easy to use, handy, fast and efficient device which converts any document on Computer into Braille text. It breaks the barrier of limited knowledge for the people who can't see.

Demolishing the barrier of Blindness in achieving the human right "RIGHT TO EDUCATION"

WHY: Although "Right To Knowledge" is the birth right of every person on this Earth, but many are devoid of it due to socio-economic, political or health reasons. Blindness is a very major cause of illiteracy. An average of about 80% blind people are devoid of education. This rate even goes higher in case of areas which lack the facilities. This project of Universal Braille Writer aims towards imparting a vast resource of knowledge to the people who can't see.

WHAT: Universal Braille Writer is a social innovation which adopts technology for the betterment of mankind. It is designed using the principles of Embedded Systems which converts any document on Computer to Braille text instantly. The data is sent serially from the computer to the microcontroller where it actuates a sequence of vibrators thus impressing upon paper to form corresponding braille letter of the received English alphabet.

MERITS:

  1. It is easy to use as it has a hand glove which can be worn in one hand and the tips of the fingers are pressed gently upon the paper (on which Braille text is to be written). When vibrators are activated, Braille is written and the finger tips are moved to next location.
  2. It is fast and efficient as it converts any document on Computer directly to Braille text thus creating a Braille document saving money and time.
  3. It is economical.
  4. It quickly delivers a Braille text of any urgent data needed.
  5. It is expandable to 'multi-lingual to Braille text writer' i.e it can support conversion not only from English but also other languages.

SOCIAL IMPACT: This project not only provides an opportunity to a Blind person to learn the text whose Braille document isn't available (by creating it themselves) but also inspires to distribute knowledge as much as possible. It will improve the socio-economic condition of society by bringing literacy, status-quo and employment of Blind person in action. Thus Universal Braille Writer will prove to be a successful method to impart education to all which is each and every person's human right.

Who gains the most? 
Blind people are going to gain the most as they will get a wide variety of Braille texts available at least cost. This will lead to increase in their knowledge and make them self-dependent. Not only this, but it will also provide a cost effective way to make a Braille text of a document of their choice. Internet will not be mere a 'well with water at great depth' but they will also be able to gain from it.
Who pays? 
Government and NGOs are the main partners who will be paying for this device. They will be buying this device and giving it for free to people who can't pay and at some reduced cost to people who can pay. Further, as a part of social responsibility, many corporate can also become part of this project to finance its production and to provide it to the people who need it.
