Prevent summer learning loss among low-income students while working to create innovative teaching practices.

The Summer Learning Lab is a program that produces the dual impact of enhancing summer enrichment opportunities for low-income students while providing innovative and effective professional development opportunities for high quality teachers.

The Summer Learning Lab is a self-sustaining service that provides free academic and project-based summer enrichment programming for primary and secondary students at low-income public schools, and is designed to address problems at the student and teacher levels.   For students, the program will provide enrichment that mitigates the widespread summer learning loss that impacts many low-income children. Also, based on our research, children are more receptive to project-based curriculum, so we expect the program to cultivate academic interest and make provide a more enjoyable learning process for students. For teachers, it will serve as a lucrative and innovative professional development opportunity in which teachers can develop new teaching practices and curriculum that can be sold to education consulting services. The revenue generated through these license agreements will fund future program operations.

Roadmap to Success:

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
Our innovation is a self-sustaining summer program that will serve two purposes: (1) Provide low-income students with constructive, educational guidance and an opportunity to explore academic interests, and (2) Give leading teachers the chance to earn money over the summer, practice innovative teaching styles, and receive professional development instruction.
2. Who gains the most?
Students in low-income areas and teachers who want to develop their professional skills gain the most.
3. Who pays?
The program will initially be funded through grants and will be sustained by selling or licensing course materials and program research.
4. What is your success?
Our success will be measured by the amount of children who make academic gains through our program.
5. How will you do it?
We will implement our strategy by first testing the platform locally in Austin, Texas. We will use the initial program to refine and strengthen our curriculum, understand funding requirements, and build partnerships with educational consulting companies. The program's long-term goal is to expand operations nationally.
