Sky crops is an innovative vertical farm that uses technology and abandoned urban areas as its basis of growth.
Its plan is to grab old buildings that are no longer being used and build a vertical farm inside them. These farms consist of multi layered floors that will have a greater density than a regular farm, so in less space we will be able to produce more food.
The production of food would be in closed spaces without outside light because it’s most likely that this project would be in an urban environment and find a clear space with continuous sunlight is really hard. So the solution to this problem is the use of LEDs that are adjusted especially to the optimal wavelength for plant growth. Also it would be best to find vegetables that grow 24/7 under constant light in a controlled state like onions carrots and lettuce. This would mean a constant process of growth that regular farms don’t have. This also opens the possibility of diversification while it starts as a small farm with a small variety of crops that require the same conditions. If the project lifts off, this can be expanded into different production cycles and producing seasonal plants all year long, as long as they are confined to the conditions that they require.
The impact on the community would be mainly for the re-use of an old or abandoned building so from this unused space to turn it into an inspiring project that generates jobs for the people involved in the farming process, food for the city and a new face to an ugly part of the city. This would mean that what could be a hindrance for the local government will become a new source of wealth for the area.
The customers for this would be people interested in fresh and healthy vegetables, planted right above their heads and close to their homes and restaurants, the transportation cost instead of being hundreds of kilometers from the fields to the market would only be a flight of stairs and the car drive back.
