Overview: For over a decade, I witnessed and was acutely affected by the impact of this non-existent health care system. While DR Congo is a post-war country, endowed with vast and rich natural resources, its citizens have an estimated life expectancy of 40. This can be prevented! I have noted that the inadequacies in the system have led to millions of deaths from early infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, obesity, diabetes, cholera and poor hygienic practices. In DRC, those who are unable to pay their bills face imprisonment. No access to health care and the lack of health education are killing a promising society.
Why: In poor countries like the DRC, health care is considered a luxury and often people have to decide whether to feed an entire family or pay for medical care. Young women who have been raped walk countless miles to receive appropriate treatment for infections. Fathers are forced to bury children due to malnutrition or lack of proper vaccination. New mothers and their new born are imprisoned because they are unable to pay for maternity bills, and often faced with early infant mortality due to lack of pre-natal care. There are special prisons in hospitals for those unable to pay maternity bills. These are the needs that my plan will directly address.
Goal: There is a dire need for a system of insurance through which people pay affordable and sustainable rates. Saving lives with micro-health insurance scheme aim to enhance services and achieve sustainable and affordable community healthcare in DRC. This affordable health care insurance will provide the underprivileged with the ability to be served and treated.
