'Savaary' will reduce air pollution, traffic congestion & energy usage in Mumbai, India & save 700 kt CO2/year

Savaary is a community-based project which envisages a cleaner environment in major metropolitan cities in India by bringing a change in the way people commute on road. It aims to reduce the pollution, traffic congestion and energy consumption. The social problems are a)   Pollution (air): India emits more than 6% of the global carbon emissions which is about 2 Gt CO2. And the growing transport sector accounts for more than 9% of total emissions. Metros are highly polluted due to the addition of 1000s of vehicles every day. b) Traffic congestion: The economic development has led to the sudden growth of private vehicles without adequate growth in infrastructure (roads & bridges) causing traffic congestions. The vehicles further pollute during the slow movement of the traffic & during traffic jams. c) Energy consumption: The transport sector in India is run on fossil fuels (petrol, diesel). Despite depleting fossil fuels, the energy consumption is inefficient by driving vehicles with empty seats.

Savaary project: Savaary project is aimed to address all the three environmental problems. It'll maximize the utilization of the private cars (for e.g. 5/car instead just 1) by making it a semi-public transport. The idea is, a ‘Savaary’ member can share their empty seats in his/her car with fellow ‘Savaary’ members, who are travelling in the same route. Hence, the no of private cars will be reduced by sharing rather if everyone chooses to drive a vehicle independently. This is not car pooling, because the ‘Savaary’ user, won't need to find their ‘rider/passenger’ pre-planned. It won't need the help of smart phone.

How? Savaary will match the riders & passengers of the same route via SMS in real-time and alert them when they come closer to each other. The rider will display the ‘route no’ on the car for easy identification. The riders & passengers identify themselves using 'Savaary' smart card which will be issued after background verification. Therefore, both the riders and passengers can have a fair degree of trust between them. Passengers will buy pre-paid coupons to use this service & riders will get redeemable Savaary Carbon Credits after giving a ride. All users will pay a nominal fee for the smart card.

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
There are 2 shortfalls in the ride-sharing idea. One is the sense of insecurity while riding with an anonymous person. 2nd is to find the rider/passenger on one's route without a smart phone or GPS. INNOVATION: 1) Savaary will do a background verification of the users before issuing smart cards with photo id to create trust between users 2) Passengers can seek a rider or rider can seek a passenger, on the same route via SMS supported by mobile phone applications that can even work on GPRS phones
2. Who gains the most?
There are 3 main gainers viz users, public & environment. The riders will benefit by receiving redeemable Savaary Carbon Credits for the rides given to passengers. The passenger will save money by not using his/her car and paying lesser than the taxi fare. He/she also saves time by not waiting for public transport. The public will benefit from the less congested road. The cleaner environment & lesser energy consumption during this process will serve a larger purpose of making the world better.
3. Who pays?
The passengers will buy a pre-paid coupon for using this service. The riders will get redeemable Savaary carbon credits once they give a ride. In addition, both the Savaary users, riders and passengers will pay a nominal fee to get the 'Savaary' smart card with photo id. The fee includes the cost of background verification, smart card, and the SMS service.
4. What is your success?
The success of Savaary is based on the number cars reduced on the road and the number of users benefit from the service, which corresponds to the number of users and number of rides in a year. I define 50,000 users as success for 12 months, 200,000 for 3 years and 0.5 million for 5 years. On a rough estimation, half a million users sharing their cars between themselves, will reduce the total number of cars on road in Mumbai by 10% and save 700 kilo tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
5. How will you do it?
Will develop software to store & process the data and co-ordinate the SMS service using mobile phone applications. Will establish partnership with vendors for doing background verification of the users & issue smart cards. A helpline will receive emergency calls & complaints. Will build a website where users can rate their riders, write blogs, and connect with fellow users. Promote the concept through social media (43 mn facebook users in India). Will approach govt agencies for support & grants.
