Simple low cost adaptive hand pump with integrated filter solving drinking water problem for billions.

How many people lack access to drinking-water ? Have you ever pondered!

Water is an incredibly important issue but unfortunately, this is often not recognised – neither by international leaders, nor by national policy makers.Tragedy doesn't ends here further. There are many reigons where even water is not available. If available its not drinkable. If drinkable, flood makes it unfit (open water sources get polluted, hand pumps get submerged etc.). Not only floods there are other natural as well as human made systems that makes them unusable.

This scenario is not only for India, but in many other countries too, around the globe. According to the United nations, 884 million people around the world do not have access to clean and safe drinking water. And we aim to solve this drinking problem with combination of recent development in cleaning technology with the old technology(hand pump).

Generally hand pump is used for underground water but our hand pump won't be constrained to it. It can also be used on any stagnant / running water system like ponds(clear/dirty), lakes, river etc. Even this system can be modified for sea water. If possible we are also planning to generate very small scale of power generation as byproduct from this hand pump.

In flood reigon the supply of fresh water to the people caught in flood is difficult. Even if the supply of packed water is made its limited in resource. Inspite of having water all around they can't drink it as its unfit. Instead of supplying packed water if they get our pump it will help them as it works on almost all type of water source.

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
1) Integration of latest cleaning technology with the older one i.e. hand-pump 2) Generally hand pump is used for underground water but our hand pump will not be constrained to it. It can also be used on any stagnant / running water system like ponds(clear/dirty), lakes, river etc. Even this system can be modified for sea water. 3) With advanced filtration methods, it can even generate power on a small scale 4) Works in flooded region more effectively than generally dispatched water packet
3. Who pays?
The Government would have to pay for initial set-up. If not, NGO or local village welfare committees or even village people can help with this. The maintenance cost will be low and in appropriate scale, in accordance to its users (poor people).
4. What is your success?
We have not come up with a practical working model yet, This idea is just in research and development phase, and if implemented it will be a blessing for its users. We are just students of engineering college and are trying to use the knowledge available to us. The idea is very good and we are hoping for the best.
5. How will you do it?
1) We will start with prototype development and will analyze data for making it work on pond, rivers and other stagnant water( including ground water). 2) If system works fine then we would take a village as experimentation ground ( if possible a place where flood is common) and then we will analyze real time data. 3) Based on the results observed, we can improve our product, come up with its short comings.
