I. Rationale:

This project will be implemented in the northern province of Rwanda, District of GICUMBI, in GIHEMBE refugees’ camp; Indicate the indigenous peoples targeted in the project; The indigenous people targeted in this project are refugees living in GIHEMBE refugees’ camp especially women, girls and children above 12 years of ages;

In 1999-2000, the Eastern Congo Democratic Republic was devastated by war which made many people to leave Congo and come to look for shelter in Rwanda. Here they were concentrated in one camp called GIHEMBE refugees’ camp in the northern province of Rwanda. This camp contains about 20,000 refugees among of whom 30% are children under 15 years of age, 40% are women and girls .

The main issues that our projects tends to handle in this camp are

A high reproductive rate: in the past 2 years the number of births has increased of 20%.

Poor hygiene and sanitation: lack of sufficient latrines and water supply systems

A big number of poor hygiene related diseases: 200 hundred cases of diarrhoea cases reported in 2010

Childhood deaths due to poor hygiene related diseases and malnutrition

Many cases of HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases coming mainly from overcrowding and low education level.

II.    Objectives

 Main goal of our project: Improve the health situation of people living in GIHEMBE refugees’ camp

Specific objectives of our project:

Increase of the number of women participating in family planning by promoting use of modern contraceptive methods.

Decrease of childhood deaths due to inadequate sanitation

1. What is your innovation? 
Decrease of childhood deaths due to inadequate sanitation. Increase of awareness of HIV/AIDS, Sexual Transmitted Diseases, Malaria and Tuberculosis in the camp. Decrease of malnutrition cases found in the camp. Promoting hand washing culture especially in school age children in the camp. Decrease of poor hygiene related diseases like diarrhoea in the camp.
2. Who gains the most? 
The indigenous people targeted in this project are refugees living in GIHEMBE refugees’ camp especially women and children above 12 years of age and American Refugees Committee and UNHCR for nourishing them cause of increase the number of children, food rations can't be increased.
3. Who pays? 
We will need assistance from donors (NGOs and foundations) by fundraising on them in financial and technical skills.
4. What is your success? 
50 refugees, 20 men and 30 women will be trained as health peer educators in the camp, 1000 women will be taught about family planning and reproductive health, 800 women will be taught about hygiene, nutrition and balanced diet, 15 water harvesting tanks will be installed at one primary in the camp, 4000 school age children will be facilitated in hand washing and will be familiar with hand washing culture in their daily life activities, for 3 years
5. How will you do it? 
Reproductive health and family planning which will be implemented through teaching sessions at grouping areas such health centres and grassroots communities’ level. Hygiene and nutrition education will be implemented through teaching sessions at health centres or grassroots communities’ level and will especially concern women coming in antenatal consultation, pregnant women and mothers with children above 12 years old. Installation of 15 water harvesting tanks on primary school for pupils
