Next Step Leaders
Teacher-leaders can have the greatest impact on teacher effectiveness, directly improving student achievement.

Next Step Leaders will provide leadership development training for highly-effective classroom teachers who are also teacher-leaders (department chairs, grade-level leaders, etc.) in their schools.  Our comprehensive approach to developing teacher-leaders will help close the achievement gap by improving  teacher-leader coaching and management of peers, which will impact teacher-effectiveness, student achievement, and ultimately, overall school performance.

Mid-level managers and teacher-leaders at schools, districts, and charter networks will develop into effective communicators, coaches, evaluators, and managers of adults to increase teacher effectiveness.  The core professional development, including 360 degree feedback, personalized assessments, whole group leadership training, and individualized one-on-one coaching will develop exceptional coaching, evaluation, communication, leadership, and accountability skills for effective department and grade-level teacher leadership.

Next Step Leaders improves human capital and creates efficiency wins at the district, administrator, and teacher levels. School Districts do not have the capacity to develop leaders at this early stage in their careers, yet need to recruit and retain talented teachers and create a leadership pipeline.  Principals are tasked with identifying, promoting, and developing teacher-leaders, but do not have the tools or the capacity to clearly define these roles or develop standard metrics to evaluate leaders.  Next Step Leaders will fill the void for school districts by developing the leadership pipeline and for administrators by developing and evaluating teacher-leaders.

Roadmap to Success:

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
Teacher-leaders have the potential to have the most significant impact on teacher quality and development, yet receive little to no training on how to develop as managers and leaders of their peers. Next Step Leaders will provide targeted, data-driven leadership and management development for mid-level managers in schools (e.g., grade level chairs, department leaders). The professional development will be a combination of in-person group training, online modules, and one-on-one coaching.
2. Who gains the most?
The teacher-leaders who need the "next step" in management and leadership development will gain concrete skills, knowledge, and mindsets to bolster their effectiveness in leadership and classroom roles. Teacher-leaders often move into administrative roles, so districts and schools gain a developed, cultivated leadership pipeline. Most importantly, teachers will receive more effective coaching and thus, will be more effective teachers for their students.
3. Who pays?
Next Step Leaders (NSL) is a non-profit organization. In the first year, grant funding will be required to pilot the program and gain momentum, but by year two, NSL will be financially self-sustaining. To do this, district teacher professional development funds will be allocated to the program by paying per teacher-leader. The price charged is substantially lower than competitor leadership programs and fits within the typical district-funded professional development per teacher allocation.
4. What is your success?
A pre- and post-assessment and 360 degree feedback will measure the success of the teacher-leaders' management development throughout the year. Teacher-leaders will establish individual, student achievement, and teacher performance growth goals, which provides the ability to track progress over the year. By year 3, NSL aims to partner with 3 large Texas districts and 2 Teach For America (TFA) sites. The sustainable NSL model can be scaled to other cities as new partnerships are built.
5. How will you do it?
A pilot and a control school study will be underway before year 1. During this time, partnerships will be built with schools, districts, and charter school networks to promote and sell NSL. Structurally, three large group sessions will be given throughout the year, in addition to 8 hours of one-on-one coaching. Supplemental online modules will support learning. During the summer, TFA rising second years and alumni teacher-leaders will be targeted for two-day leadership workshop.
