Light Up Africa's solution provides Africans with clean, reliable, and affordable access to electricity.

Imagine a schoolgirl living in a small, mud constructed hut in rural Kenya.  The girl is studying next to a dimly lit light fueled by kerosene, which is slowly poisoning her lungs and irritating her eyes and skin.  Her mother tells her that she must put out the lamp because they cannot afford to burn any more kerosene for the day.  The girl is studying for the exam which will give her the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education.  Without a high score, she will not receive a scholarship to attend secondary school.  This will force her to drop out of school and work with her mother to provide for her family.  The young girl is devastated and begins to cry.  She knows that her only chance of getting out of poverty is through a strong education.  Just then, her father enters the home.  He wipes away his daughter’s tears and hands her a box.  He tells her this box has the power to make sure she is able to continue her education at a secondary school because she will never be forced to stop learning because her family cannot afford to pay for light.  Her father flips a switch on the box, and the entire hut is illuminated.  The young girl’s tears are replaced with a smile full of hope.  She now knows that her desire for knowledge will no longer be inhibited by the lack of light.

Light Up Africa’s vision is to bring reliable and affordable electricity to everyone in Africa.  Light Up Africa aims to provide small-scale energy generating devices to individuals and entrepreneurs in developing countries in Africa.  The first product is the Zoom Box.  The Zoom Box is a device that generates electrical energy through kinetic motion and stores the electricity within the box to be used for powering personal devices.  By harnessing the kinetic energy created from the movement of walking, bicycles, motorcycles, livestock, and boats the Zoom Box provides a significant competitive advantage in emerging markets and serves as a game changer in developing parts of the world.  The competitive advantage of the Zoom Box employs the ability to use solar, wind, water, and kinetic energy all within a durable, portable, and affordable product.

SUPPLEMENTAL RESPONSE SECTION FOR CLEARLY ANSWERING FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS

What is your innovation?
The Zoom Box is an efficient and affordable working model of a kinetic energy storage device. The Zoom Box will be easily attached to bicycles, motorbikes, livestock, and boats in order to provide electricity for small personal devices, such as cellular phones and lamps. It is designed in such a way that it can be attached to versatile vehicles, maintain portability, and minimize the amount of moving parts to limit the need for repairs.
Who gains the most?
With the Zoom Box, Kenyan’s will be able to power lights to help their children study at night where there exists no source of electricity. Numerous additional positive social outcomes resulting from the use of the Zoom Box may exist. These include other family members utilizing the Zoom Box for personal use such as reading and walking at night. Families and individuals will have increased access to electricity to charge their cellular phones, and the need for kerosene will be reduced.
Who pays?
The Zoom Box customer base includes everyone without access to electricity and it can be segmented in to the following categories: small and medium entrepreneurs; rural workers such as farmers, fishermen, taxi owners; and individual households. There are approximately 27.7 million farmers, over 500,000 fishermen and 290,000 bicycle taxis in Kenya that can utilize the Zoom Box. This means the Zoom Box can bring electricity to over 70% of the Kenyan population.
What is your success?
Light Up Africa aims to provide clean, safe, affordable, and reliable technology through the sale of the Zoom Box to 1,000 Kenyans within 12 months of launching our product. Within 36 months, Light Up Africa projects nearly 10,000 units to be sold. After 60 months, it is Light Up Africa's aim to provide access to electricity to the 33 million Kenyans who do not have access.
How will you do it?
LUA plans to start with an in-house operating structure but will rapidly switch over its business and operations to a “franchise model”. LUA has a focused and well thought out five-step approach to launch and manage its operations. This model is summarized as: create a “value constellation” of different stakeholders, identify and train local entrepreneurs, create customer care model, launch outreach programs, and finally, monitoring and evaluation of competitors, services, consumers.
