Kito provides street youth the tools and resources they need to become self sufficient and agents of change.

KITO International is a non-profit social enterprise with a simple philosophy: give street youth an economic opportunity and they will WORK their way off the streets and out of poverty. The estimated 300,000 youth that live and work on Kenya’s streets face disease, poverty, exploitation, and violence every hour of every day. Four out of 10 Kenyans are unemployed; almost two-thirds of which are youth between the ages of 18 – 35 Inexperienced street youth simply cannot compete in that job market.

Envisioned by a former street boy, KITO refocuses street youth’s survival skills to create a lifetime of self-sufficiency. KITO’s model is broken down into five components:

Recruit - Street youth are recruited by team members, recommended by affiliate organizations, or they apply on their own. Selection -  Staff select KITO youth through a participatory interview/assessment process that includes individual and group evaluation exercise and challenges (e.g.,goals, leadership and teamwork capabilities, entrepreneurial potential, life/work attitude, and overall performance during the process). Train - After successfully completing the assessment process the new participants begin a rigorous two-month training experience that covers life skills, entrepreneurship skills, basic personal finance and savings, marketing and sales, leadership development and team building. Employment - After completing the skills’ training graduates are offered employment at KITO’s business, EcoSafi, for four months. At EcoSafi, KITO youth put their training to work . The hands-on real-work experience in marketing, customer relations, accounting, and production gives the graduates with a job reference and practical knowledge of how to run a business.

Because KITO is committed to the success of each and every youth that walks through our doors staff work with each youth to create a personal exit strategy to ensure their continued success and reach their potential as they grow into adulthood. Previous graduates have started their own business, found full time employment, or continued their education with the help of KITO’s Scholarship Program.

I am so happy that through Kito I am now able to not just be independent, but also equip other youth with computer skills. I never imagined I could be able to help anybody.”  Wilkister, a Kito alumni.

"Kito has given me an opportunity of a lifetime. Through their support, I joined college and has immense hope about the future. My income has grown, I have a roof on top of my head. Things that I never imagined. Thank you Kito." Reuben Owuor.

Roadmap to Success:

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
There are hundreds of street youth rehabilitation centers in Kenya. Despite their honorable intentions, they fail to provide exiting youth with a path towards self-sufficiency. In essence, street youth are forced into a "street trap," as those who graduate from rehabilitation programs are often forced to return to the street. KITO seals this gap by providing street youth with opportunities to retrace their self worth in order to sustain their livelihoods and contribute to their community.
2. Who gains the most?
KITO targets young men and women ages 17-24. Although the male street youth population is larger than the female street youth population, KITO strives to provide equal opportunities for both. Upon joining KITO, youth enter in a rigorous 2-month training program to prepare them for a life off the streets and the working world. They then are placed in temporary employment in a KITO Enterprise to get hands-on experience working in an income-generating venture to produce eco-friendly bags and flip-
3. Who pays?
KITO International has received ongoing support from foundations, corporations and individuals who are inspired by our mission and the results we’ve achieved. However, KITO is committed to becoming self-sustainable in the long run. At present, we do generate revenue from our retail customers. In five years we aim to generate sufficient revenue from the sale of our products to finance KITO's core operations in Nairobi. Additional funding will be sought to expand our programs throughout Kenya and
4. What is your success?
We measure success by the number of youth we train and, most importantly, the graduates that maintain their jobs after participating in our work and entrepreneurial training. Upon admission we conduct a baseline survey of the new youth with 3 months follow up survey and finally a last one when they exit. This information helps us to measure/monitor the progress a youth makes. To date KITO has impacted the lives of 70 street youth; enabling them to move off the streets into the mainstream economy
5. How will you do it?
KITO is committed to becoming a global movement of street youth. Our current estimate is that for every youth that KITO trains and supports, five other street youth benefit indirectly through our community outreach program. For example, KITO plans to reach 120 youth in 2013, which will translate into 600 youth indirectly impacted by our work. More tangibly, every business created by KITO graduates empowers other youth and their family members to consider participating in KITO or other education
