Jatalo is led by Aditya Viswanathan with a team of ambassadors.
Jatalo has funded the education of hundreds of underprivileged children by providing textbooks.

In December of 2010, Jatalo founder Aditya Viswanathan was visiting relatives in India when he stopped by a school in the rural outskirts of Delhi. Upon walking to the gates of the school, he noticed a group of small children in tattered clothes on their tiptoes, inquisitively peering over the wall at a lesson being taught in a classroom. After talking to the kids, he learned that many children in the area were unable to go to school due to the price of textbooks and related materials. Furthermore, attending students were dropping out at an alarming rate due to the burden placed on their families. Many of these children harbored dreams that seemed unattainable to them but very realistic if they were able to pursue an education.

Stunned by the circumstances of these children, Aditya began to talk to local administrators about the problem. What he found out impacted him even more. A group of generous teachers in the area was funding the education of a few needy children out their own salaries (as they had apparently been doing for several years). Furthermore, many of the kids that had been funded in previous years by these teachers had gone on to college and had begun professional careers. In fact, a few of these kids (now grown up) came back to thank these teachers for giving them the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

This proved something incredible to Aditya. Despite their lack of resources, these children had an inherent curiosity and love for learning. Given an education, these kids were no different than any others; they truly could go on to accomplish their dreams. However, generation after generation, the children unable to pursue a proper education were forced to continue the lifestyles of their predecessors, fulfilling lowly roles as fruit vendors, housemaids, and servants.

Jatalo was created to encourage impoverished kids to emerge from this cycle by pursuing an education as well as to spread awareness of the situation by bridging supporters (you guys) with the children you are impacting. Today, Jatalo is a steadily growing startup with a team of ambassadors spreading word of its mission all over the country. Whatever you may carry in your Jatalo backpack, remember that you also carry the future of a child in need. Together, we can make a difference. Don’t ever forget it.

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
Jatalo innovates in two ways: the model and the relationship. Our one-for-one donation model ensures that we guarantee only as much as we can give. For every backpack we sell, we donate a year's worth of textbooks to a child in need, and for every bracelet we sell, we donate one textbook. Also, Jatalo's relationship with its beneficiaries is unique. We communicate directly with school administrators to ensure that the funds are appropriated quickly and properly.
2. Who gains the most?
The current beneficiaries of Jatalo's model are schoolchildren in Haiti, India, Thailand, and Tanzania, and we are working to extend our donations to Mexico. Our donation enables these children to attend school with adequate textbooks and supplies. While no one can summarize the gains a child can get from an education, literacy will open doors for these children to become leaders of their communities.
3. Who pays?
Customers purchase ethnically-inspired backpacks and bracelets to support underprivileged children from our affiliate regions. One backpack purchase funds a year's worth of textbooks and a bracelet funds one textbook. Our backpacks are unique products. Each is inspired by an art style from a Jatalo affiliate region. For example, the Serape Classic is inspired by the Serape blanket weaving style of Mexico and the Bogo Classic is inspired by the Bogolanfini cloth of Africa.
4. What is your success?
We have donated textbooks to several hundred schoolchildren in our affiliate regions. Sponsored students are selected through an application process focusing on need as well as educational interest. Many of them are listed on our website (http://bit.ly/wEDJQV). In the next couple of months, we will expand to more nations.
5. How will you do it?
Since launch, Jatalo has gained traction through the website (jatalo.com), social media, internet marketing, PR, and the Ambassador Program. Customers make purchases via our website as well as other storefronts, and we will be approaching brick-and-mortar retailers in the near future. To promote the brand, we have gained coverage in several media channels such as Dallas Morning News and will continue to build PR. Our Ambassador Program lets us engage with college students to market the brand.
