Out of 312, million Americans, 43 million are disabled, that is 1 out of every 6 Americans. One million Americans rely on wheelchairs for mobility. 19.4 million Americans have problems walking or climbing stairs. 10,000 spinal cord injuries occur every year, forcing Americans to rely on wheelchairs. Also, the number of disabled veterans has jumped by 25 percent since 2001 — to 2.9 million. Regardless of the situation, if you are faced with limited mobility, your world slows down. My team and I will develop The Handi App to help people with limited mobility become more independent.
The Handi App is an application for phones, music players, or computers. Its main purpose is to create a detailed route on how to move from one point to another by indicating where ramps, elevators, and handicap-accessible restrooms are. It will also allow the users to rate each of these accomodations and indicate if they are working properly.
The variety of potential users will allow us to start locally, move nationally and eventually at a global level. The creation of this app will make thousands of people more independent.
The Handi App prevents users from slowing down and keeps them on track.
