The project aims to overcome the current severe energy crisis in Pakistan.

GP Energy is a social innovation project initiated by Global Pakistan to address the critical energy deficit issue in the country. Pakistan is in dire need of an alternative energy solution like Solar. Many rural parts of the country still do not have access to electricity, and urban regions that do have access are facing an increasing energy deficit crisis, with power failure reported at 16-18 hours per day in some cities. This has led to frustration, riots and strikes by the masses, in addition to health issues and work inefficiency as temperatures go above 45 degree celcius in the summer season. The demand-supply energy gap is widening at an alarming rate, with an average of 8% per annum increase reported in the 2011-2012 fiscal period. GP Energy has tried to address this energy crisis by promoting Solar Energy as an alternative energy solution. To-date, several solar panels have been installed in various rural and urban areas in the last 6 months. The company's Solar Innovation Model addresses 4 dimensions:  (1) Dedicated solar solutions, (2) hybrid solutions, (3) small DC packages for remote areas where no national grid is available, (4) Tailor-made solutions of all sorts.

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
Dedicated solar systems have been installed in homes and offices to help compensate for power failures. Portable Solar power box solutions have been developed for small villages with no electricity, keeping prices as low as 50$ per solar unit installed, which provides sufficient supply for DC lights, DC fans, mobile charging/ small radio entertainment port.
2. Who gains the most?
Solar energy as an alternative solution helps compensate for frequent power failures in the country, and also reach out to rural regions with no access to electricity. Hence, the project benefits individual households, businesses and society at large.
3. Who pays?
GP Energy helps with the financing of small solar units, especially in the rural under-served regions of Pakistan by providing ease of installment payments with zero interest to poor households. Global Pakistan acts as guarantor for small households and enterprises that need a loan, but do not have the financial credibility to apply for one. The role of funding institutions like World Bank, ADB, GIZ in developing state-of-the-art infrastructure for solar power are of paramount significance.
4. What is your success?
In terms of social impact, we are providing a workable solution to address the electricity load deficit in urban regions and electricity access to the rural regions of Pakistan. We have also established a dedicated customer care department to provide instant after-sale services.
5. How will you do it?
We are helping create awareness through seminars, exhibitions, TV shows, radio campaigns, outreach programs for rural areas, small solar project installation free of cost to promote solar energy and its viability. We provide internships and training camps, and are establishing local manufacturing facilities to cut down on costs of imported products. We are liaising with the government for subsidies to promote local manufacturing and create further awareness about the benefits of solar energy.
