Benefits of GiraDora

Time and Water Efficient: GiraDora is more efficient and saves the user time because it washes clothes by the load versus individual articles. By using a washboard and scrubbing each article individually, washing could take upwards of five hours. With GiraDora, the women are able to complete a load in a fraction of the time by agitating them simultaneously in a system more akin to a conventional washing machine.

Affordable: GiraDora’s target cost is less than 1/5th of the cheapest spin-dryer on the market, and less than 1/20th the cost of a top-load washer. It combines the functionality of both washing & spinning, without electricity.

Improves Ergonomics to Reduce Back Pain: The seated operation of GiraDora is much more comfortable and ergonomic than women’s current practice of squatting over basins on the ground thereby helping to alleviate chronic lower back pain.

Reduces Incidence of Wrist Injury: GiraDora also allays the physical stresses on the hands and wrists coupled with hand washing clothes than can lead to chronic conditions like tenosynovitis.

Improves Respiratory Health in Winter: Damp clothes--which take up to 3 weeks to drip-dry in winter--cause mold, which was a contributor to many respiratory problems in children, including asthma. GiraDora acts like a centrifuge, removing the majority of moisture from clothing, drastically reducing drying times on a clothesline, hampering mold growth.

Improves Comfort: The self-contained unit eliminates the need to constantly submerge ones hands in cold water, which causes skin conditions and much discomfort in winter. The self-contained unit also allows women to wash clothes indoors in their home in cold or rainy weather.

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
GiraDora is the first human-powered combined washer and spin dryer designed specifically for users in the base of the pyramid. Currently, hand-washing clothes is a burden that can take up to 6 hours a day, 3-5 times a week. GiraDora, helps alleviate this burden by offering an affordable solution that increases efficiency while also combating the numerous health problems associated with hand-washing clothes.
2. Who gains the most?
USER BENEFITS • Comfortable and ergonomic operation more than doubles productivity • Allows user to sit in a more ergonomic position reducing chronic back pain • Ability to wash, rinse and spin dry clothes removes user's hands from painfully cold water, reduces water use by rinsing more efficiently, and eliminates the risk of tenosynovitis from wringing clothes • Affords opportunities in laundry services, rentals, & direct sales to help generate income to begin breaking poverty cycle
3. Who pays?
For under $40, GiraDora more than doubles productivity, increases health of women and children, and affords the opportunity to begin breaking the poverty cycle. The user sits on top of the drum-like appliance and pumps a pedal with her foot, which agitates, cleans, rinses, then spins-dries clothes. While providing a more comfortable, ergonomic, and efficient way to clean clothes, GiraDora also affords opportunities to generate income.
4. What is your success?
By 12 months we would consider GiraDora a success if we had finished a second round of field testing in Peru and had placed 50 units in slums in both Lima and Santiago for long-term testing. By three years, GiraDora would have established a presence in South America and validated our business plan. Building on our schools new relationship with Ashoka, GiraDora would be introduced to India. In five years, be at least a 15% towards the ultimate goal of reaching 1 million users.
5. How will you do it?
Social impact for GiraDora will be measured by both quantifiable and qualitative standards. Water and time saved by GiraDora is a quantifiable metric that can be easily tracked. These savings thereby allow opportunities in income generation and raising the living standard of a family living in poverty, a more difficult but equally important qualitative metric to track. Ironically, when a family has outgrown a GiraDora by moving up economically would be another way to judge GiraDora's success.
