Help groom poor kids for a better tomorrow

Vocational Training Institute, Somaiya Campus: Classes are held four times in a week at VTI, where around 80 students between the age group of 16-25 years undergo the training. Two batches are given the training – Morning batch and Evening batch.

NASEOH: Classes are held once a week for around 20 physically challenged students.

Total Number of Student Volunteers: 10

Course Structure: The entire course is divided into the following eight modules:

1) Savings

2) Budgeting

3) Banking

4) Consumer Awareness

5) Microfinance

6) Self Help Groups

7) Entrepreneurship

8) Investments

Content Development: The content has been developed by the student volunteers under the guidance of the Finance faculty of K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, along with help from NABARD. The content is reviewed and updated every year.

Teaching Pedagogy: Regular classroom lectures are supplemented with practical applications - guest lectures, bank visits, revision tests, buy-sell games, role plays and live projects that help achieve better understanding and retention of the concepts.

Duration of the Programme: The classes usually begin from the third week of August and continue till March. Around 25 sessions are conducted during the programme for each of the three batches.

Documentation: Record of attendance, tests and all the activities is maintained for future reference and smooth operation. The attendance is recorded both of students and the facilitators.

Impact Assessment: Pre- and post-course questionnaire is administered among the students to assess the improvement of knowledge in the practical aspects of finance among them. Regular projects are assigned and Buy-Sell games are conducted so that the transition from class room teaching to actual implementation of the concepts happens seamlessly. The students are gauged on their performance throughout the course and successful students are given certificates.

1. What is your innovation? 
to impart awareness about finance related topics, knowledge of which is essential for the development of self as well as the community at large. The financial literacy training module used in the training imparted to students aims to enable them to manage their income, expenses, investments and finances in a better manner. This project has been running successfully for three years, and has touched the lives of many people
2. Who gains the most? 
The students who drop out of school because of some unavoidable circumstances.
4. What is your success? 
The project has been running successfully for more than 3 years and more than hundred students have been benefited from it
5. How will you do it?
