The situation
Waste dumpsites in many cities in developing countries pose a serious health hazard to communities living around them and heightens the risk of contraction of diseases to habitants of this communities.Eco-green initiative aims at solving this problem and enabling environmental sustainability. The common scenario is wherby waste is dumped at waste sites then efforts to pick the recyclabe content of this and resell to recycling firms are undertaken but this is ineffective as the rate of depositing into this dumps is higher than that of picking the recyclable content and the waste is heavily mixed up.That also exposes the ones collecting to a high risk of contracting diseases.
The solution
Our social ventures's model mainly aims at cutting off the dumpsite between the producers of waste and recycling firms and leaving them for organic waste mainly by an initiative to motivate urban populations to provide separated waste(organic, inorganic) for recycling using a rewarding system where they earn credits(recycle credits) that are redeemable for cash or other goods while we sort the recyclable waste and recycle collected plastics to produce plastic lumber coupled with carpentry workshops to produce platic lumber furniture products and reselling the other recyclable content to other recycling firms.
Benefits
This is all geared towards a cleaner better environment by
- Cutting-off/reducing dumping at waste sites increases the overall efficiency of the waste management in terms of percentage of waste recovered for recycling and reduces the percentage of that which gets lost as a pollutant to the waste sites.
- Reducing deforestation by providing a substitute for wood(plastic lumber) in construction and furniture production.
- Providing employment as the social venture works with self help groups(youth groups, women groups) in the collection model.
- The recycle credits provide a model of gain from waste for urban communities thus also motivating them to take part in the initiative.
