Nurture, Protect and Love children right from birth - a strong foundation paves way to a progressive society

There is astounding research data supporting that fact that the formative years (below 5 years) of a child are critical in carving the child's future. Children need to be isolated from several environmental factors such as financial instability of the family, socio-economic disparity and other aspects that may inhibit proper psychological conditioning. We believe that a lax in this stage of life cascades into something more serious -- the child will not be ready for peer level interactions and has a very high chance of being a school drop-out. Cradle India Foundation aims to meet this very basic need by proving free, high-quality day-care services to children from poor families whose mothers work.

With only 1% of rural children in India graduating 8th grade, we believe that a grass root model such as ours will be beneficial to motivate children to step into the schooling system with enough motivation to complete it. Needless to say, the benefits that a proper schooling experience brings in are enormous. Not only does the child grow into a well educated person, but also become career-minded. As a consequence the child (now a grown up person) chooses a profession that is far more rewarding that what the parents had chosen. This is real change. We play a small role in this change, but a vital one. Our purpose is to inhibit short-term deviations to the child’s choices, which would later reap huge benefits.

Our model provides a seamless backward integration to what the Right to Education Act wishes to achieve. Children admitted to Cradle India are provided with all the right amenities and environment for good psychological development which would make them into good students while they get into the schooling system. This becomes all the more important as the Right to Education act aims to cut drop-out rate apart from giving access to schools for new students. With so many children gaining access to free and compulsory education, feeder organizations such as Cradle India plays a vital role in ensuring children join the schools with the right mindset enabling them to interact in a competitive social environment.

SUPPLEMENTAL RESPONSE SECTION FOR CLEARLY ANSWERING FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS

What is your innovation?
The most important years of any individual are the formative years, where most of the emotional, social and cognitive development takes place. Any damage done during these years is irreversible, and may result in higher drop out rates from schools. We give free day care service to children below five years of age whose mothers work in the unorganized sector. The mothers feel empowered and work more efficiently and productively upon assurance of a safe and fun environment for their children.
Who gains the most?
Children and their mothers. To the child, ample care, nutrition and right environment are provided to ensure they join the schools with the right mindset enabling them to interact in a competitive social environment. The mothers reassured that their children are well taken care of, can put in longer and more productive hours. Their chances of getting employment also increase. Overall, they feel more empowered and confident.
Who pays?
Right now the model works on the traditional donor-organization relationship. However, we have noticed, more mothers come forward and volunteer 1 day/week which helps reducing the running expenses. In addition, we have designed and developed Cradle India merchandise and organized fundraisers, with the intention to generate awareness as well as get monetary support.
What is your success?
The over all improvement in the social and cognitive skills of the children. For example, Vijaya was once a school drop-out, would come home early everyday, with an injury. After being in CIF for 8 months, she not only she cleared her entrance exam in one of the best schools in the neighborhood, but also stood first in her class. Her tution hasnow been waived! Her mother's income has also doubled, she also learnt to write. We envision, the drop-out rates to go down with such early interventions
How will you do it?
The goal is ensure that all children receive not primary but high school education. And we start from when the child is born. Towards this, we plan to use the two-pronged model. Top down approach: To change the policy by working closely with the government and private sector to provide incentives to communities with these centers. The bottom up approach: to work at grassroots level within the communities, make them aware of the need of early intervention, and involve them in setting the center.
