The value of biodiversity cannot be estimated and it constitutes a country’s unique treasure. It is also a heavy duty for each generation to be able to submit it to the following generations intact and perhaps better. The protection of biodiversity has to be everyone’s concern and involve all related disciplines. Education is a key factor for branding biodiversity its holistic character. To meet with this challenge it is therefore necessary for education to adjust its programmes and facilitate the integration of all biodiversity facets in the school curriculum and lateral activities

Children of Rwanda, the future decision makers, are increasingly disengaged from the natural world. Often they don't have the tools to make knowledgeable decisions about the natural resources of their country. In light of this, Rwanda Biodiversity Media Group (RBMG) has identified Conservation education 4KIDS as a strategic way of connecting kids with the nature through their educators; engaging them in stewardship activities; and increasing their perception on the biodiversity and their habitats. This 3-year, multi-partner, comprehensive project will focus on an innovative, integrated conservation education program for educators with may be extended to secondary schools if applicable, with amount of funds available. This project will increase conservation education capacity through professional development trainings for educators and volunteers; creating CE4K specific teaching materials such as documentary films, posters, pictures, etc..; and developing service-learning programming. This project will be implemented in 15 primary schools and work with more than 150 educators, impact 170.000 students.

The Impact

The present project aims to link kids, educators, with the nature by providing wildlife-based conservation and environmental education that fosters responsible actions toward wildlife and related natural resources. Through the use of different methods and materials, the project will prepare effective and appropriate communication and education products such as documentary films, flyers, posters, stories, and Picture about the nature, to accomplish the goal of developing awareness, skills, knowledge, and commitment. This will result in the making of informed decisions, responsible behavior, and constructive action concerning biodiversity and the environment.

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
As problems connected with biodiversity loss, sharing perception with different groups is the best way to develop and implement realistic plans for sustainable use. In such scenario; Conservation education 4Kids project aims to increase conservation education capacity for kids through professional development trainings for their educators; creating CE4K specific teaching materials such as short documentary films, posters, pictures, etc..; and developing CE4K curriculum.
2. Who gains the most?
This project will make a real difference to children’s lives and how they interact with their natural environment and will look at children connecting with nature. Kids will gain the most, their parents come next, followed by government institutions and NGOs working in conservation, finally the community and Biodiversity hotspots in general.
3. Who pays?
Any NGO,Government institution personal individuals interested with our contribution to the art of biodiversity conservation.
4. What is your success?
150 educators will have the curricula and skills needed to teach conservation lessons, resulting in sharing skills with kids to critically think and problem solve about environmental issues.15 schools will be concerned, resulting in 170.000 students, teachers and parents becoming better conservation stewards, thus reducing biodiversity loss at these sites. A retrospective (pre and post-project) will be completed,to measure knowledge gain and attitude changes, along with identified practice changes.
5. How will you do it?
30 workshops for educators will cover topics such as: definition of the biodiversity and its relationship to human, and ecosystem goods and services.High-quality, non-biased materials, such as short documentary films,posters,pictures,burners,etc..,will be used and distributed at each workshop.2 “train-the-trainer” workshops will be organized to increase the capacity of CE volunteers to facilitate workshops and help at educational events, greatly increasing the program’s impact and effectiveness
