BIS (Baño Integral Sostenible), an innovative bathroom module designed to meet the basic sanitary needs of a family. BIS comprises a Urine Diversion Dehydration Toilet, a Shower and a Sink -that are fed by an ICS type Solar Collector- a Grease Trap and a Micro Constructed Wetland. Unlike conventional ecosanitation solutions, BIS offers an integral sustainable cycle, in which not only human excreta is separated and returned to the soil as organic fertilizer, but gray water is also treated and can be used for irrigating the fertilized soil, enabling the possibility of having an organic family farm which can supply with organic food, thus closing the loop at a local scale.
Designed as an appropriate technoloy, BIS is easy to assemble and easy to use. It is made with locally available materials, wich gives the user the possibility to repair and customize the bathroom, generating a deeper appropriation of the product. Furthermore, it fosters self-sufficiency by avoiding dependency on service providers. Thus, BIS is a flexible solution for slums, rural, urban and natural disaster areas.
