The use of renewable materials to create bioplastics

BioSolutions is a Mexican company that develops, produce and commercialize bio-plastic composites made out from agave fibers. With these composites sustainable and environmentally friendly plastic products can be produced.

The technology of BioSolutions relies on the creation of a compound material in form of master batch that combines renewable materials with traditional plastics.  This compound can be used in several applications like packaging, injection parts and bio-plastic bags among others. The compound when mixed with traditional plastics helps to accelerate the biodegradability on those products. The use of this compound also reduces the use of petroleum-based resources (finite scarce resources) because it acts as a substitute to plastic resins.

The technology has been tested and approved at laboratory level and it is currently in the process of scaling up its technology to the pilot plant level. The Patent of this technology has been filed.

BioSolutions provide the Plastic Industry a bio-plastic compound meeting one of its current needs that is to produce environmentally friendly plastic products and to reduce the consumption of petroleum-based plastics.

Mexico is a nascent market for bioplastic, comparing to Europe and the U.S., for instance where there is more knowledge about this subject and acceptance of these kinds of products. There are other bio-plastics in the market but most of them are made out of starches of corn and potato. The competitive advantage of BioSolutions is that it doesn’t use food products to generate its bio-plastic; instead it produces it using a sub-product of the Tequila Industry considered waste for them.

The intention of the company is to start operations in its Pilot Plant by March 2012 in order to test its product at an industrial level and to make market validation with prospective clients. The intention is to test the bio-plastic compound with plastic bags manufacturers in the area training them how to use the product and coaching them on how to accommodate this product with its actual or new clients.

BioSolutions´ Entrepreneur Team is formed by professionals on the Business and Chemistry areas. It has been always supported by Research Centers and Institutions in the country well known on the development of plastic products.

FIVE PROJECT QUESTIONS Required (60 - 90 minutes)

1. What is your innovation?
The innovation factor of BioSolutions´ technology is that in order to produce its bioplastic it doesn’t use food products; instead BioSolutions´ raw material (agave fiber) is abundant and available throughout the year in various regions of the country; and it is considered a waste of the industry.
2. Who gains the most?
The plastic manufacturers -like plastic bags; trays; disposable products- will be able to offer sustainable plastic bags to its customers and they will gain their customers acceptance as producers of environmentally friendly products.
4. What is your success?
The success is to be recognized as the first mexican company producing bioplastics from renewable resources through sustainable processes. The waste generated by the Tequila Industries will be reduced as BioSolutions will be using it to generate the bioplastic compound and the environment will be less threatened because of the decrease of use of non-renewable sources like petroleum based resins.
5. How will you do it?
We will start with tests at the Pilot Plant Level and validate the commercial and market opportunity of the product.
